NBA Tonight was an NBA studio program associated with ESPN’s basketball coverage. The original NBA Tonight premiered in 1982, the first year ESPN televised NBA games, with Greg Gumbel and John Andariese among its early hosts. The title later disappeared as ESPN’s NBA studio coverage evolved through programs including NBA 2Night and NBA Fastbreak. ESPN revived the NBA Tonight name for its late-night highlights program in 2006.
The later version aired primarily on ESPN2 and focused on the night’s NBA action. Its coverage included game highlights, scores, league news, analysis, and discussion of the performances and storylines attracting attention around the league. The program also featured recurring segments such as “3Ds,” which highlighted the night’s top dunks, defensive plays, and assists. Over time, NBA Tonight became part of ESPN’s broader lineup of daily NBA studio programming.
ESPN regularly adjusted the program’s hosts and analyst lineup. Kevin Connors served as a primary host during the early 2010s, while Jonathan Coachman and other ESPN personalities also hosted individual editions. Cassidy Hubbarth later became the show’s most prominent host, leading NBA Tonight alongside analysts such as Tim Legler, Bruce Bowen, Antonio Davis, P.J. Carlesimo, and George Karl.
The program remained part of ESPN2’s schedule through the 2016 NBA season. ESPN described it that year as its nightly NBA highlights and wrap-up show, while its programming increasingly incorporated newer studio formats such as The Jump. The final documented episodes aired in June 2016, after which ESPN’s NBA studio coverage continued through programs including The Jump and NBA Countdown.
