Friday Night Fights was a weekly boxing series broadcast on ESPN2. It premiered on October 2, 1998, with a card headlined by Thomas Tate’s decision win over Demetrius Davis. The bout took place at Philadelphia’s Blue Horizon. The show launched two years after ESPN’s long-running Top Rank Boxing series ended in 1996. It concluded its 17-season run on May 22, 2015, with a Boxcino tournament final broadcast from Corona, California.
Each broadcast combined roughly two and a half hours of live boxing with in-studio segments covering news and debate. The show tracked punch statistics through a system called PunchStat. It compiled jabs and power punches thrown and landed by each fighter. A companion series, Tuesday Night Fights, briefly ran alongside it during the summer of 2001. At its peak, Friday Night Fights was ESPN2’s highest-rated regular series.
The broadcast team changed several times over the show’s run. Bob Papa called blow-by-blow commentary alongside ringside analyst Teddy Atlas when the series debuted in 1998. Joe Tessitore later took over blow-by-blow duties, while Max Kellerman joined as a studio analyst. The show’s sponsorship branding also changed over the years. At various points, it aired as “ESPN Friday Night Fights Presented By Just For Men Haircolor.”
Brian Kenny hosted the show’s studio segments for much of its run before departing for MLB Network in 2011. Todd Grisham later took over as in-studio host during the program’s final years. Meanwhile, Teddy Atlas remained the show’s ringside analyst throughout most of its 17 seasons, becoming its most consistent on-air voice.
