Matt Vasgersian was born on September 28, 1967, and grew up in Moraga, California. He attended Campolindo High School in Moraga before earning a communications degree from the University of Southern California in 1989. He then broke into professional broadcasting in 1991, calling minor league games for the Chicago Cubs’ rookie affiliate in Huntington, West Virginia.

Vasgersian called play-by-play for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1997 to 2001 and the San Diego Padres from 2002 to 2008. He then joined FOX Sports in 2005, calling MLB and NFL games alongside Olympic assignments for NBC Sports. He anchored ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball from 2018 to 2021 before becoming the Los Angeles Angels’ play-by-play voice. Additionally, he has voiced Sony’s MLB The Show video game series since 2006.

Matt Vasgersian has been a studio host at MLB Network since its January 2009 launch. He regularly anchors MLB Tonight and Hot Stove, and calls MLB Network Showcase games. In March 2026, he rejoined NBC Sports as play-by-play voice for MLB Sunday Leadoff on Peacock. That same month, he called Netflix’s first live MLB broadcast, the Yankees-Giants Opening Night game.
