Kevin Peter Pietersen was born on 27 June 1980 in Pietermaritzburg, Natal (now KwaZulu‑Natal), South Africa. He is the son of Jannie Pietersen, an Afrikaans father, and Penny Pietersen, an English mother who moved to South Africa as a child; the family was cricket‑mad and supportive of his early talent.
Pietersen attended Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg, a school with a strong cricketing tradition, where he developed into a standout batsman. He made his first‑class debut for Natal in 1997–98 and, after a fallout with selectors over his future, moved to England in 2000 to qualify via residency and join county cricket.
He rose rapidly through Nottinghamshire and Hampshire before becoming a cornerstone of England’s batting line‑up from 2004. He played 104 Tests (8,181 runs, 23 centuries), 136 ODIs and 37 T20Is, captained England briefly in 2008–09, and was central to the 2005 Ashes triumph and the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 title.
After a turbulent relationship with the ECB, his international career ended in 2014, though he continued in franchise leagues including the IPL until 2018. Post‑retirement, Pietersen became a high‑profile commentator and analyst for Sky Sports Cricket, alongside staples like Mark Butcher, Eion Morgan, Nick Knight, Zainab Abbas, and Nasser Hussain. He has also done commentary for Star Sports, Fox Cricket and others, and featured in the Sky documentary series KP: Story of a Genius.
In his personal life, he is married to British pop singer Jessica Taylor (formerly of Liberty X). The couple, who met in 2006 and married in 2007, have two children: son Dylan (born 2010) and daughter Rosie (born 2013). They primarily live in the Wentworth Estate, Surrey, and also spend time in South Africa and Dubai.
