Mark Alan Butcher was born on 23 August 1972 in Croydon, Surrey. He is the son of Alan Butcher, a former Surrey and England cricketer, and Elaine, a Jamaican-born mother whose parents arrived in the UK on the Windrush.

Butcher attended Cumnor House Prep School in Purley, then Trinity School in Croydon, before finishing at Archbishop Tenison’s School. He turned professional with Surrey at 17 and became a key top-order batsman for county and country.

He played 71 Tests for England between 1997 and 2004, scoring 4,288 runs at an average of 34.58, with eight centuries. His career was blighted by persistent knee problems, forcing his retirement in 2009 after 19 years as a professional.

Since retiring, Butcher has worked as a commentator and pundit, principally for Sky Sports Cricket in the UK alongside Nasser Hussain, Stuart Broad, and Michael Atherton, while also appearing on Test Match Special (BBC), Star Sports and ESPN Cricinfo. He has co-produced the documentary England in the 90s and contributes to Wisden.

In his personal life, Butcher is known as a musician and songwriter, with albums to his name and a long-standing interest in music. He has described himself as a “musician, songwriter, pundit, former international cricketer, golf tragic, wine appreciator, Graham Greene fan, sunshine spreader”.
