Basketball Night in America is NBC Sports’ flagship NBA studio and pre-game show. It launched with the 2025–26 NBA season as part of NBCUniversal’s new media rights agreement with the league. The program, which airs on NBC and streams on Peacock, serves as the lead-in for the Sunday Night Basketball franchise.
The show was originally launched in 1990 under the name NBA Showtime. It served as the pre- and post-game studio show for the NBA on NBC coverage, which ran on the network for 12 years until 2002, when NBC lost the league rights to ABC. NBC relaunched the show in 2025, after a hiatus of more than two decades, and renamed it Basketball Night in America, in line with the Football Night in America pre-game show that precedesNBC Sunday Night Football coverage.
The program focuses on in-depth analysis, matchup previews, player storylines, and league-wide updates ahead of primetime games. It also includes studio discussions, video breakdowns, highlights from around the league, and feature stories. Unlike traditional studio shows, this program operates as an on-site traveling production, broadcasting directly from the arena of that night’s marquee game. This format mirrors the successful structure of Football Night in America, allowing the broadcast team to capture the arena’s live energy and atmosphere.
Basketball in America is hosted by Maria Taylor, who also handles the hosting duties for Football Night in America. She is joined in the studio by a high-profile panel of analysts, including Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady, as well as WNBA star Caitlin Clark.
