Duff Takes the Cake is a baking show that aired on Food Network from 2019 to 2020. The series was produced as a docuseries rather than a competition show, following the real-world operations of Duff Goldman’s bakery, Charm City Cakes. It was Goldman’s fifth Food Network series, solidifying his status as one of the network’s most prolific stars.
The show follows Goldman and his Charm City Cakes team as they conceptualize and execute elaborate cake builds. The process includes client consultations, design sketches, flavor development, structural engineering, baking, decorating, and transportation. The cakes are often sculpted, multi-tiered, or gravity-defying in design, requiring both artistic detail and technical precision.
The format is documentary-style rather than competitive. There are no eliminations or judges; instead, the narrative focuses on problem-solving, tight deadlines, and the logistical challenges of assembling and delivering large edible installations. Viewers see the step-by-step progression from concept to final reveal at the event location.
Some of the cakes featured include: a hyperrealistic whale cake transported by boat on the Pacific Ocean, a 100-pound bull cake for the Professional Bull Riders circuit, and a six-tiered wedding cake for Goldman’s own wedding reception.
Duff Goldman serves as the show’s host and creative lead. He is joined by supporting team members from his bakery, including collaborators Geof Manthorne, Guan Rivera, and Katrina Rozelle.
