Steve Gelbs was born February 1, 1987, in Rego Park, Queens, and grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. His father worked as a physical therapist for the New York Rangers, sparking Gelbs’s early interest in sports. He graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications in 2009. That year, he also won the Syracuse Press Club Award for Best Radio Sports Feature.
Gelbs began his professional broadcasting career with MSG Varsity, where he worked as an anchor, host, reporter, play-by-play announcer, and color commentator. He then spent about 18 months at MSG Network, hosting MSG 150 during Knicks and Rangers telecasts and college basketball coverage. He joined SNY in 2013 and became the Mets’ field reporter in 2015 after filling in for Kevin Burkhardt during the 2014 season.
Today, Gelbs remains SNY’s Mets field reporter and Jets studio programming host. His Jets duties include the network’s pre- and post-game programming, while he also contributes to Mets studio coverage. In addition, Gelbs works seasonally as a freelance studio host and commentator for NHL Network, a role he began in 2022.
