The Edge

Contestants answer questions and bowl for cash, balancing knowledge, skill and nerve as they battle to stop their balls at the edge.

The Edge is a fast-paced BBC Two quiz show that combines general knowledge with the precision and nerve of bowling. Four contestants compete to answer questions correctly and earn the opportunity to roll balls down specially designed cash lanes, with the amount they win depending on how close their ball finishes to the edge. However, a roll that goes over the edge earns nothing, making every attempt a tense balance between ambition and control.

The competition progresses through several rounds, with contestants gradually eliminated as they attempt to accumulate money. As the game advances, the cash values increase and the lanes become more challenging, while contestants must also contend with tactical elements such as danger zones. This means success requires more than simply answering questions correctly; players must also judge risk and make smart decisions about when to play safely or push for a larger reward.

The quiz element tests contestants across a broad range of general-knowledge subjects, with correct answers allowing them to unlock their bowling opportunities. Players who answer quickly can gain an advantage by securing their preferred lane, while those who are slower may be left with more difficult options. The combination of knowledge and physical skill gives the programme its distinctive format and keeps the outcome unpredictable.

The bowling rounds provide the show’s biggest moments of suspense. Contestants carefully release their balls and watch as they travel down the lanes towards increasingly valuable cash zones and, ultimately, The Edge itself. Getting close without going over can turn a carefully judged roll into a substantial cash prize, but even a small error can wipe out the potential reward. The final round raises the stakes even further, giving the remaining contestant a chance to win the money accumulated during the competition. After another round of questions, the finalist must decide how many balls to use, with fewer attempts offering the chance to win more of the accumulated prize.

Gabby Logan hosts the second series of The Edge, bringing her experience as a television presenter and sports broadcaster to the competition. Known for her work across major sporting events and entertainment programmes, Logan provides an energetic and engaging presence as she guides contestants through the questions, bowling challenges and high-pressure decisions. Her lively commentary helps build the tension as players attempt to get as close as possible to the edge without sending their winnings over it.
