Pointless Celebrities

Celebrity teams tackle obscure quiz questions, aiming for low scores as they compete for charity and a chance to win cash.

Pointless Celebrities is the celebrity spin-off of the BBC One quiz show Pointless, bringing together famous faces to compete for charity. Rather than rewarding the most obvious answers, the programme challenges contestants to find correct but obscure responses that few people in a survey thought of. The less popular a correct answer is, the fewer points it earns, making the aim of the game to score as low as possible.

Each episode features four teams of celebrities, usually grouped around a particular theme, profession or shared interest. The contestants face a series of general-knowledge questions covering subjects such as entertainment, sport, history, music and popular culture. Their answers are compared with those previously given by members of the public, creating plenty of opportunities for surprising discoveries and unexpected low-scoring answers.

The show’s unusual scoring system gives it a distinctive twist on the traditional quiz format. An obvious answer can earn a contestant a high score and put their team in danger, while a more obscure response can be worth just a handful of points. The coveted Pointless answer, which nobody in the survey gave, is particularly valuable and can make a major difference to the competition.

The winning pair earns the opportunity to play the final round, where they attempt to find three Pointless answers and win money for a charity of their choice. The programme’s relaxed atmosphere, playful banter and occasional wrong turns make it as much an entertainment show as a quiz, while the celebrity format allows viewers to see familiar personalities competing outside their usual professions.

The show is presented by Alexander Armstrong, with Richard Osman as co-host. Armstrong has fronted Pointless and Pointless Celebrities since the format began, bringing a warm, witty and understated presenting style to the competition. Osman, who co-created Pointless and previously co-presented the main programme, remains Armstrong’s long-standing partner on the celebrity edition, providing answers, statistics and humorous commentary. Their relaxed chemistry and genuine friendship have become an important part of the programme’s appeal.
