The Chase is an American trivia game show on ABC, adapted from the British series of the same name. The format previously aired in the United States on the Game Show Network from 2013 to 2015. ABC revived the concept in November 2020, initially ordering nine episodes. The series premiered January 7, 2021, and has aired three seasons so far.
Each episode features three contestants competing individually in the Cash Builder round to add money to a shared team pot. Players then face the Chaser, a professional quiz expert, one-on-one to protect their winnings and advance toward the Final Chase. Surviving contestants combine forces in the two-minute Final Chase to outrun the Chaser and bank their winnings. Unlike the four-person teams used in the British version, the American adaptation fields only three players per episode.
The series initially featured Jeopardy! champions Brad Rutter, Ken Jennings, and James Holzhauer as its Chasers. Mark Labbett, known as “The Beast,” also appeared during the first season. Victoria Groce, Brandon Blackwell, and Buzzy Cohen joined the Chaser lineup for the second season, expanding the show’s roster of professional quizzers.
ABC tapped Sara Haines, a co-host of The View, to lead the revival in November 2020. Haines built her on-air career at NBC’s Today before moving to ABC News and The View in 2016. She hosted every ABC season of The Chase from its 2021 debut through the season 3 finale in 2023. No fourth season had been ordered as of 2026, leaving the show’s future undecided. Haines has said publicly that she would welcome the show’s return whenever the network revisits its game-show slate.
