The Chelsea Handler Show is a sketch comedy series that aired on E! for one season in 2006, starring comedian Chelsea Handler. Produced by 3 Arts Entertainment, it mixed Handler’s stand-up material with taped sketches, celebrity spoofs, and segments filmed outside the studio. E! greenlit the show in early 2006, after Handler had built a following as a correspondent on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and a cast member on Oxygen’s Girls Behaving Badly.
Each episode opened with Handler performing stand-up for a studio audience, then cut to pre-taped sketches built around a single bit. One episode sent her to quiz an elderly bowling league on pop culture and stage a mock “Extreme Makeover” for a homeless shelter; another had her teaching a class in one-night-stand etiquette and competing in a “World’s Worst Driver” contest, with former supermodel Janice Dickinson guest-starring.
E! ordered eight episodes to start, though the season ultimately ran to twelve. It ended on September 8, 2006, after roughly five months on the air, and the network did not order a second season.
One of the show’s producers, Chris Franjola, stayed on when Handler and E! built her next series, Chelsea Lately, the following year. Franjola became a writer and one of its most frequent round-table regulars, appearing on the show more than anyone besides Handler and her sidekick Chuy Bravo. Chelsea Lately became Handler’s signature series, running for seven seasons before ending in 2014 and eventually leading to two Netflix follow-ups, Chelsea Does and Chelsea.
The Chelsea Handler Show was Handler’s first time carrying a show as its sole on-camera lead, rather than one voice in an ensemble. Its combination of stand-up and pop-culture sketches previewed what she’d do a year later on a bigger scale: Chelsea Lately kept the same targets and persona but swapped taped sketches for a live round-table of comedians reacting to entertainment news. Twenty years on, the 2006 series is mostly remembered as the step that got her there, well before Chelsea Lately, Chelsea Does, and Chelsea made her one of E !’s most recognizable hosts.
