Chelsea Lately premiered on E! on July 16, 2007, produced by Handler’s own company, Borderline Amazing Productions. It grew directly out of Handler’s earlier E! project, The Chelsea Handler Show — a sketch comedy series that ran in 2006 — and marked her transition into a full-time nightly host. The new show aired for half an hour, weeknights at 11:00 p.m. ET. In its debut season, it averaged 448,000 total viewers.
Each episode opened with a stand-up monologue from Handler, typically focused on pop culture or current events. Next came a three-person roundtable panel — a rotating mix of comedians, actors, and E! staff — before Handler moved into a celebrity interview lasting roughly six minutes. Sidekick Chuy Bravo sat in his own chair at the edge of the stage, delivering one-line jokes throughout. It also featured announcer Mike Rock, who opened each show by previewing the night’s topics and guests.
Over time, Chelsea Laterly built a loyal following and a recognizable rotating cast of regulars. Comedians Ross Mathews, Josh Wolf, and Fortune Feimster were frequent roundtable staples, each occasionally stepping in as guest host when Handler was unavailable. At its peak in 2011, the show averaged nearly one million viewers per episode. However, over time, viewership declined, falling to an average of 572,000 viewers in later seasons.
In November 2011, E! extended the show through 2014. As that contract approached its end, Handler chose not to renew it — instead signing an exclusive multi-year deal with Netflix. The final episode aired on August 26, 2014, drawing just over one million viewers for a live farewell broadcast. Handler went on to host the Netflix talk show Chelsea from 2016 to 2017, and has since hosted the Critics’ Choice Awards multiple times and guest-hosted The Daily Show in 2023.
