NASCAR Countdown was a live pre-race studio show broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC. It debuted on February 17, 2007, alongside ESPN’s return to NASCAR broadcasting after a prior absence from the sport. The show ran until November 16, 2014, when ESPN’s live NASCAR race coverage came to a close. It served as the lead-in for every Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series telecast the network carried.
The show ran an hour before Sprint Cup races and thirty minutes before Nationwide events. Hosts and analysts previewed storylines, discussed standings, and set up the day’s race from a mobile pit studio. That setup echoed the traveling “Hollywood Hotel” format FOX used for its own Cup Series coverage. Drivers occasionally stopped by the studio during qualifying broadcasts to preview their race.
NASCAR Countdown cycled through a few hosts during its run. Brent Musburger anchored the debut broadcast in February 2007. Allen Bestwick took over partway through that same season and held the role through 2010. Nicole Briscoe became the full-time host in 2011 and closed out the show’s run in 2014.
Analysts Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty joined Briscoe for the program’s final seasons. Earlier years featured analysts Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside host Bestwick. Pit reporters including Dave Burns, Jamie Little, and Shannon Spake also helped to deliver updates from pit road throughout the show’s run. Reporter Marty Smith also contributed to the broadcast in its later years.
NASCAR Countdown wrapped up alongside ESPN’s broader NASCAR coverage after the 2014 season. That coverage had spanned eight years under an agreement the network signed in 2006. The show’s final broadcast came from Homestead-Miami Speedway. Briscoe closed out the two-hour program with a brief handoff to the booth, without an extended farewell.
