Rob Dorsett grew up in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, where he attended The King’s School Grantham. His exact date of birth and details about his parents are not publicly documented, though based on his 1995 Young Sports Journalist of the Year award and his university timeline, he is believed to have been born around 1973–1975. He has supported Nottingham Forest throughout his career.

After studying at the University of Birmingham, Dorsett began his journalism career as a volunteer reporter for the university’s student newspaper, Redbrick, where he developed his football writing. In 1995, while at university, he won the Young Sports Journalist of the Year title awarded by The Independent newspaper — a formative accolade that set the trajectory of his career.

His first professional contract came in 1996 with BBC Radio WM in Birmingham as a news reporter. He moved to television in 1997, covering news and sport for BBC Midlands Today, then in 2000 moved to London as Chief News Reporter at BBC London. In 2002 he returned to the East Midlands as Sports Presenter on BBC East Midlands Today, before joining Sky Sports in 2004 as Midlands Correspondent — a role he held for over a decade.

Dorsett has produced investigative documentaries on racism in football and academy player welfare, covered Leicester City’s extraordinary 2016 Premier League title, and was one of the first reporters on the scene when owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s helicopter crashed in October 2018. Rob Dorsett is married to Rachel Dorsett, who is Director of the Consumer PR Division at Cartwright Communications in Nottingham. The couple have given joint careers talks at The King’s School Grantham, where Rob was formerly a pupil.
