Nathan for You is an American docu-reality comedy series that premiered on Comedy Central on February 28, 2013. Co-created by Nathan Fielder and Michael Koman, the series ran for four seasons before concluding on November 9, 2017. It quickly built a cult following, earning an average critic score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes throughout its run. Many critics later named it one of the best television comedies of the 2010s.
Each episode follows a small-business owner who receives elaborately staged, unorthodox marketing advice that parodies traditional management consulting. One segment featured a pizzeria promising eight-minute delivery with a nearly inch-wide “free” pizza. Episodes typically ran 21 to 25 minutes, combining hidden-camera footage of real business owners with scripted setups. The second season’s Dumb Starbucks stunt, a real pop-up shop built around parody law, became a viral news story.
The series culminated in “Finding Frances,” an 85-minute finale following a Bill Gates impersonator’s search for a long-lost love. Critics singled out the episode for blending the show’s comedic premise with unexpected emotional depth. Nathan for You also became known for blurring the lines between scripted and unscripted television, influencing later hybrid documentary-comedy formats. The complete series later saw release on DVD and through streaming outlets including Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video.
Nathan Fielder created, starred in, and directed most episodes, playing a deadpan version of himself throughout the series. He also served as executive producer alongside Michael Koman, Dave Paige, and Clark Reinking. After the series ended, Fielder carried its blend of documentary and fabrication into HBO’s The Rehearsal in 2022. Comedy Central confirmed in October 2018 that the show would not continue, with Fielder choosing to pursue other projects.
