Deadly Islands is an original wildlife documentary series that premiered on Animal Planet in 2014. Dave Salmoni’s production company, Triosphere, produced the show. It builds directly on Salmoni’s earlier work on shows like Rogue Nature (2007) and Into the Pride (2009), both of which established his reputation as a credible, hands-on wildlife presenter for the Discovery family of networks.
Every episode takes Salmoni to a different island. The islands explored include a South Pacific shark-populated atoll, a South Atlantic island frequented by orca hunting pods, a grizzly bear-dominated island in the North East Pacific, the Galápagos Archipelago, and Devil’s Island off the coast of Panama. He investigates the local wildlife, meets researchers and residents, and studies species that range from venomous snakes to giant predators.
The series explains how geography, climate, and isolation shaped each island’s animal population. It also examines the risks these animals pose to people who share their habitat. Unlike many wildlife programs, Deadly Islands combines natural history with adventure. Salmoni often enters challenging environments to observe animals in the wild rather than in controlled settings.
The series received mixed reviews. Some audiences appreciated the exotic locations and the quality of the wildlife footage. However, some critics argued that Salmoni’s on-screen persona leaned too heavily toward drama, with excessive reactions designed to manufacture tension rather than convey genuine scientific insight. The show concluded after one season. A making-of special titled “Deadliest Moments” also aired as part of the season, with Salmoni walking viewers through the behind-the-scenes challenges of filming in such remote locations.
