The Singing Bee is an American musical game show that originally aired on NBC and later on CMT, combining karaoke with a spelling-bee-style competition. It premiered on July 10, 2007, during the height of the musical game show craze. The show was based on the British ITV program Sing It Back: Lyric Champion.
The gameplay centered on contestants — drawn from the studio audience — competing in elimination-style rounds. A live band performed a portion of a well-known song, then stopped abruptly. The contestants would then pick up and deliver the correct lyrics from that exact point. Contestants who got the lyrics wrong lost the opportunity to compete further.
On NBC, the show culminated in a high-stakes final round called “The Final Countdown,” where a contestant faced up to seven songs cold — no title, no artist, no year given — and had to rely purely on lyric recall. Each correct answer was worth $5,000, and nailing five earned the top prize of $50,000. Three wrong answers would end the game, though a contestant got to keep any money already won.
The NBC version, hosted by Joey Fatone, aired for one season before the network pulled it from the air. That same year, a workplace-themed spin-off, The Singing Office, aired on TLC, hosted by Joey Fatone alongside Mel B. Then, in 2009, the show found new life on CMT, this time hosted by Melissa Peterman. The CMT version aired for four seasons before concluding on July 23, 2012.
