The Great Food Truck Race is a competition series that premiered on Food Network in 2010. Hosted by Tyler Florence, the series blends travelogue, culinary competition, and business strategy. It follows teams as they travel across selected regions in branded food trucks, competing to generate the highest sales.
The show follows a multi-city road trip in which teams must source ingredients, scout locations, and market their menus to locals in unfamiliar territories. Each episode typically features a “Truck Stop” challenge—a technical cooking task judged by local experts—that grants the winner a significant sales advantage or cash bonus.
The show also features “Speed Bumps,” which introduce sudden obstacles, such as forced menu changes, towing penalties, or limited supplies, designed to test the teams’ resilience and ability to pivot under pressure. The last truck standing wins $50,000.
The Great Food Truck Race has undergone notable format changes across its run. The first two seasons featured experienced, professional food truck operators competing for cash prizes — $50,000 in Season 1 and $100,000 in Season 2. From Season 3 onward, the show shifted to novice contestants — home cooks and aspiring entrepreneurs — provided with trucks by the production. In Seasons 3 through 5, winners also kept their truck in addition to the cash prize, a perk dropped in Season 6 onward. Later seasons introduced themed editions, including celebrity and family formats.
