Tyler Florence

Profile Overview

Tyler Florence was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and developed his love of cooking from an early age. After graduating from Johnson & Wales University’s College of Culinary Arts in 1991, he moved to New York City, where he honed his skills under acclaimed chefs at restaurants including Aureole. He eventually became executive chef at Cafeteria in Chelsea, where his talent caught the attention of the Food Network.

Florence made his Food Network debut with Food 911 in 1999 and quickly became one of the network’s top personalities. Over the following years, he hosted multiple shows, including How to Boil Water, Tyler’s Ultimate, and Worst Cooks in America. His biggest long-running hosting role has been The Great Food Truck Race, which premiered in 2010.

Beyond television, Florence has built a serious restaurant empire in the San Francisco Bay Area. His flagship, Wayfare Tavern, opened in 2010 and remains a beloved institution. In 2021, he opened Miller & Lux at Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors, which earned Michelin recognition and was named Best Steakhouse in the Bay Area by San Francisco magazine. He also opened a second Miller & Lux at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Hawaii in 2023.
