Animal Planet launched as a partnership between Discovery Communications and BBC Worldwide. It initially focused on wildlife documentaries and nature programming for family audiences. However, in 2008, the channel underwent a major rebrand, shifting toward more dramatic and mature content. This included reality series centered on animal-related careers, predator-focused storytelling, and human-animal conflict. The channel rebranded again in 2018, softening its tone and returning to a more wonder-driven approach to animal content. 

Today, Animal Planet’s programming spans wildlife documentaries, veterinary reality shows, animal rescue series, and conservation-focused content. The channel is also home to the annual Puppy Bowl, a beloved Super Bowl Sunday tradition that draws millions of viewers each year. Originally narrated by NFL Films narrator Harry Kalas, the Puppy Bowl features shelter puppies in a football-themed setting. It has since grown into the largest non-sports TV event on Super Bowl Sunday. 

Animal Planet is home to several shows, which have built loyal audiences over the years. These include River Monsters, which investigates legends of dangerous freshwater fish and Pit Bulls & Parolees, which documents the day-to-day operations of the Villalobos Rescue Center. Other top mentions include Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet,  The Crocodile Hunter and Crikey! It’s the Irwins. 

Animal Planet has also introduced viewers to many memorable hosts, presenters and animal experts. Steve Irwin remains the network’s most iconic personality. Other well-known hosts include Terri Irwin, Bindi Irwin, Robert Irwin, Tia Torres, Dr. Jeff Young, and Jackson Galaxy. Their expertise has helped make complex animal topics easy to understand.
