America’s Best Cook

Sixteen home cooks compete in regional teams, each coached by a celebrity chef, for $50,000 and the title of America’s Best Cook.

America’s Best Cook is a reality competition game show that aired on the Food Network and Food Network Canada. The series premiered in April 2014 and completed its initial six-episode run on May 18, 2014. Unlike other culinary programs that feature professional chefs, this show specifically highlights the skills of home cooks who have mastered their craft in their own kitchens.

The show’s format revolved around a regional battle where 16 home cooks were divided into four teams: North, South, East, and West. Each team was led by a prominent Food Network star who served as a mentor, including Cat Cora for the South, Tyler Florence for the West, Alex Guarnaschelli for the East, and Michael Symon for the North. These mentors were deeply involved in the competition, as they were also eliminated from the show if their designated cooks were sent home.

The show typically consisted of two main challenges per episode: testing the contestants’ technical skills and creativity under pressure. In addition to their mentors, the home cooks had to impress various guest judges to stay in the competition. Notable industry experts such as Bobby Flay, Geoffrey Zakarian, Anne Burrell, and Ron Ben-Israel appeared throughout the series to provide critiques and decide who would advance toward the finale.

Ted Allen served as the host for the series, bringing his extensive experience from other culinary competition programs like Chopped. His role was to guide the audience through the challenges and moderate the eliminations as the field narrowed down to a single winner. The competition concluded with a “Thunderdome Finale” where the final four cooks competed in three grueling challenges until one stood victorious. The Chicago home cook Stephanie Goldfarb, who was part of Alex Guarnaschelli’s East team, won the competition and the $50,000 prize.
