Ted Allen

Profile Overview

Ted Allen was born on May 20, 1965, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in Carmel, Indiana. He traces his love of food back to his mother’s cooking and developed an early passion for food writing. Allen began his media career as a restaurant critic and senior editor at Chicago magazine. He later became a contributing editor at Esquire in 1997, where he wrote about food, wine, and style for more than a decade.

In 2003, Allen gained national visibility as the food and wine specialist on Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He went on to serve as a regular judge on Top Chef (Seasons 3–4) and as a floor reporter on Iron Chef America. Then, in 2008, Food Network came calling with an offer for his own hosting role. 

In 2009, Allen helped launch Chopped, a culinary competition series where chefs create dishes from surprise mystery basket ingredients. The show became one of the most successful in Food Network history, earning two James Beard Foundation Awards and multiple Emmy nominations. Allen also hosts Chopped Junior, which launched in 2015 and features young culinary competitors.
