Zak Bagans was born on April 5, 1977, in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He attended the Motion Picture Institute in Michigan, graduating with honors and focusing on documentary filmmaking. After college, he relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, working as a wedding DJ and video editor while pursuing his passion for documentary work. It was during this period that he met fellow paranormal enthusiast Nick Groff, who hired him to DJ his wedding.

In 2002, a life-changing encounter turned him from a skeptic into a dedicated paranormal investigator. He teamed up with Groff and equipment technician Aaron Goodwin to film a documentary, which was picked up and broadcast by Syfy in 2007. The Travel Channel then acquired and expanded it into the ongoing series Ghost Adventures, which premiered in October 2008.

Ghost Adventures has since aired across more than 30 seasons, making it a cornerstone of paranormal television. Bagans serves as its host, lead investigator, executive producer, and editor. He has also hosted spin-offs, including Paranormal Challenge (2011), Deadly Possessions (2016), and Halloween Wars (2021–2022). In 2017, he opened The Haunted Museum in downtown Las Vegas, housing artifacts including the Dybbuk Box and Bela Lugosi’s mirror.
