Jack Dee was born James Andrew Innes Dee on 24 September 1961 in Bromley, Kent, the youngest of three children of Geoffrey Dee, a printer, and Rosemary (née Stamper), whose parents were both repertory actors. He grew up in Petts Wood before his family moved to Winchester.
After training for the priesthood and working as a waiter at the Ritz in London, Dee made his stand-up debut at The Comedy Store in the late 1980s. He won the British Comedy Award for Best Stage Newcomer in 1991, leading to The Jack Dee Show on Channel 4 in 1992.
He’s since hosted numerous shows, including Jack Dee’s Happy Hour, Live at the Apollo, and Sky Comedy‘s Don’t Sit in the Front Row, while writing and starring in the BBC sitcom Lead Balloon. Since 2009 he has permanently hosted BBC Radio 4’s I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue.
He married Susan Jane Hetherington in 1989, and the couple have four children. They split their time between a family home in Wandsworth, London, and a holiday house near Chichester, West Sussex.
