Robert William Flay was born on December 10, 1964, in New York City. At age 17, he dropped out of high school and began working at Joe Allen, where owner Joe Allen quickly recognized his natural talent and paid his tuition at the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan. Flay graduated in 1984 as a member of the institute’s first graduating class. He sharpened his skills at several New York restaurants, including Bud and Jams and Miracle Grill in the East Village.
In 1991, Flay opened Mesa Grill in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, earning immediate critical acclaim for its bold Southwestern flavors. He made his Food Network debut in 1994 and launched his first show, Grillin’ and Chillin’, in 1996. From there, his television career grew into one of the most prolific in food media history.
He became a central figure on Iron Chef America, one of Food Network’s highest-rated shows, and launched Throwdown! with Bobby Flay in 2006. He is also the host of Beat Bobby Flay, one of Food Network’s longest-running competition series. Beyond television, Flay has built an extensive restaurant empire, including Amalfi by Bobby Flay in Las Vegas, Bobby’s Burgers, and Bobby Flay Steak.
