Andrew Phung was born in Calgary, Alberta, to immigrant parents — a Chinese father and a Vietnamese mother. He grew up in Calgary’s northeast neighborhoods and attended Bishop McNally High School. Drawn to performance from a young age, he joined the Loose Moose Theatre Company at sixteen and developed his comedic sensibility through improv.
Phung’s breakthrough came when he was cast as Kimchee Han in CBC’s Kim’s Convenience. In 2022, he co-created, executive-produced, and starred in Run the Burbs for CBC, playing a Vietnamese-Canadian stay-at-home dad. The show ran for three seasons, concluding in April 2024, and earned Phung the 2025 Canadian Screen Award for Best Lead Performer in a Comedy.
Beyond acting, Phung has built a successful career as a TV host. He hosted The Canadian Improv Games (2020) on CBC Gem. In 2025, he debuted as host of Big Burger Battle on Corus’ Flavour Network, which also airs on Food Network in the USA. He also hosted the landmark 2026 Canadian Screen Awards ceremony, which simulcast across CBC, Crave, CTV, Global, and STACKTV for the first time in history.
