Weakest Link

Eight contestants answer rapid-fire trivia questions to bank prize money while voting off the weakest player each round.

Weakest Link is a fast-paced trivia game show that debuted on NBC in 2001. The show, hosted by British broadcaster Anne Robinson, ran for two seasons before being cancelled in 2002. A daily syndicated version followed for a season and a half before ending in 2003. NBC revived the format in 2020 with Jane Lynch as host, which aired across three seasons before concluding in 2024.

The show, which is adapted from the iconic British series, features eight contestants answering rapid-fire general knowledge questions in sequence. Correct answers build a chain that increases the round’s prize pot. A wrong answer breaks the chain and resets the value to zero. After each timed round, the group votes to eliminate the player they consider the weakest link. This dynamic creates plenty of strategy and backstabbing, as contestants often vote out top performers to eliminate the competition.

The 2020 revival introduced several updates, including picture clues displayed on podium screens and a $1 million top prize. Starting in Season 2, the show incorporated themed celebrity editions alongside its regular civilian episodes. The celebrity episodes featured casts from Days of Our Lives, WWE, and drag competition shows, among others. The third season leaned further into themed groupings, running special editions centred on sports stars, daytime TV personalities, and holidays.

Jane Lynch hosted all three revival seasons and also served as executive producer. A five-time Emmy Award winner, Lynch brought sharp wit and dry authority to a role previously defined by Anne Robinson’s famously withering style. The show’s move to FOX as Celebrity Weakest Link in 2025 marked the end of the civilian format, with Lynch continuing as host in the all-celebrity edition.
