The Chew

The Chew was an American cooking-themed talk show that aired weekdays on ABC from 2011 to 2018. It drew inspiration from the format of ABC’s flagship daytime talk show, The View — even its name was a playful nod to its sister program. However, it traded current events and news debates for food, recipes, home entertaining, and lifestyle topics. It replaced the long-running soap opera All My Children in ABC’s daytime lineup. 

Each one-hour episode featured a rotating mix of cooking demonstrations, lifestyle tips, celebrity guest interviews, food trend discussions, and entertaining segments. Rather than following a rigid structure, the show thrived on the natural chemistry of its co-hosts, who each brought a distinct area of expertise and personality. 

Celebrity chef Mario Batali and Iron Chef America star Michael Symon handled the culinary heavy lifting; Top Chef alumna Carla Hall brought warmth and Southern-infused cooking; Clinton Kelly served as moderator and entertaining expert; and Daphne Oz contributed a health and wellness perspective. The blend made for an unusually dynamic daytime program that felt more like a gathering among friends than a traditional cooking show.

The show went through notable changes in its final seasons. Daphne Oz departed in August 2017 after announcing she was pregnant. Mario Batali stepped away in December 2017 following sexual misconduct allegations. The remaining trio of Hall, Kelly, and Symon carried the show through to its conclusion. In May 2018, ABC announced it was cancelling The Chew after seven seasons, replacing it with a third hour of Good Morning America. 

Despite a rocky critical reception at launch, The Chew found its footing quickly and became a genuine daytime hit. The show reached its 1,000th episode in 2016 — a milestone its own co-hosts admitted they did not expect to reach. It earned five Daytime Emmy nominations overall, winning Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host in 2015 for the full co-host panel, and Outstanding Talk Show — Informative in 2016.
