Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live (SNL)  is a live sketch comedy and variety television series that airs weekly on NBC. The show blends satire, political humor, original characters, and musical performances. Each episode features a celebrity host and a musical guest.

SNL was created by Lorne Michaels and premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975.  Originally titled NBC’s Saturday Night, the show was conceived to fill the late-night time slot with a revolutionary cast including John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Dan Aykroyd.

The show is best known for its live format, which allows for spontaneity and occasional on-air mistakes that often become memorable moments. The show has played a significant role in shaping American political satire, primarily through its presidential impersonations. Sketches usually respond to current events within days of their occurrence.

Creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels oversees the current era of Saturday Night Live. The show features a rotating ensemble cast, with Kenan Thompson standing out as the longest-tenured cast member in the show’s history. Other key personalities include the Weekend Update anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che, and celebrity guests suchas Finn Wolfhard and Teyana Taylor. The show also features a rotating cast of celebrity guest hosts, often major film stars, comedians, athletes, and musicians.

Over the decades, SNL has launched the careers of many notable performers, including Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Bill Murray, Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, and Adam Sandler. Beyond its comedic influence, the show also acts as a platform for musical talent, often featuring live performances from stars such as A$AP Rocky, Geese, and Cardi B.
