Restaurant: Impossible

Chef Robert Irvine helps failing restaurants survive by revamping menus and redesigning decor with a 2-day deadline and a $10,000 budget limit.

Restaurant: Impossible premiered on Food Network on January 19, 2011. It grew out of Irvine’s earlier series, Dinner: Impossible, which had aired since 2007. The show became one of Food Network’s most popular and longest-running formats. It ran for 22 seasons before ending in 2023.

The premise was simple: within two days and on a budget of $10,000, Irvine had to renovate a failing American restaurant. The goal was always to help restore the business to profitability. He worked alongside a design team that gave each restaurant a fresh look and feel. By its final episode, the show had completed missions in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

During the show’s earlier seasons, struggling restaurant owners voluntarily applied for help from Chef Robert Irvine. In later seasons, the series introduced an ambush format. In this newer format, the owners were unaware of the crew’s arrival, with concerned family members, employees, or other individuals typically reaching out to the show behind the owners’ backs.

In 2016, Restaurant: Impossible went on a hiatus after having already aired 13 seasons. The series returned in April 2019 after a three-year break, continuing until its final episode aired in April 2023. Food Network ended the show after 22 seasons, with Irvine saying the format no longer fit what the network wanted for younger viewers.

In 2026, Food Network revived the franchise with a new spinoff, Restaurant Impossible: Last Call, premiering July 23. The new series follows chef Aarón Sánchez and Canadian restaurateur Jen Agg as they rescue struggling restaurants across North America. Irvine confirmed he is not involved with the new spinoff, which shifts focus to modern restaurant crises like bad reviews and business conflicts.
