Penn & Teller: Fool Us

Magicians perform tricks for Penn & Teller in hopes of earning a guest spot in their Las Vegas show.

Penn & Teller: Fool Us was first commissioned by ITV in the United Kingdom, with an initial series of eight episodes airing in 2011. ITV canceled the show in 2012 despite strong viewership for its timeslot. The original episodes found success airing on The CW in 2014, after which the network ordered a second season of new episodes for 2015. That second season became a ratings hit, giving The CW its best numbers in that timeslot in five years.

The format is simple: aspiring magicians perform their best tricks, trying to fool Penn Jillette and Teller. If Penn & Teller cannot figure out how a trick was done, the magician wins a “Fool Us” trophy and a trip to perform as an opening act in Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas show. Filming has taken place at the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas since the second season. The show blends comedy, mystery, and genuine magic in front of a live audience.

The series has had three hosts. Jonathan Ross hosted the first two seasons. Alyson Hannigan then took over from Season 3 through Season 9, hosting from 2016 to 2023. Starting with Season 10, Brooke Burke took over hosting duties and has continued in the role throughout subsequent seasons.

Season 10 finished airing in April 2024, and the show was renewed for an 11th season for 2024-25. The series has earned a Critics’ Choice Award nomination over its run. As of 2025, Penn & Teller: Fool Us remains part of The CW’s unscripted lineup, alongside shows like Masters of Illusion
