Paula’s Home Cooking

Paula Deen’s debut Food Network series, where she shares Southern recipes, family traditions, and home-cooking tips inspired by her Savannah roots.

Paula’s Home Cooking premiered on Food Network on November 16, 2002. It was Deen’s very first Food Network series as host, following a successful pilot called Afternoon Tea. The show introduced audiences to Deen’s warm Southern personality and quickly became a foundation for her growing television empire.

Deen’s focus was on classic Southern dishes and comfort food popular with American families. Typical recipes included chicken pot pie, barbecue sandwiches, and holiday menus for occasions like Thanksgiving and tailgate parties. Deen avoided overly complicated or eccentric recipes, keeping dishes approachable for everyday cooks. Her sons Bobby and Jamie Deen appeared as semi-regular guests throughout the series.

The show’s production setup changed over the years. Early episodes were taped in upstate New York, but after 2006, production shifted to Deen’s new home near Savannah, Georgia. She announced the move during a March 2006 appearance on The Daily Buzz, with production at her Savannah home beginning that November. This relocation brought a more authentic Southern setting to the show’s later seasons.

In 2008, Deen began work on a revamped version of the series, which became Paula’s Best Dishes. The success of Paula’s Home Cooking also led to a line of cookbooks, a magazine, and additional television specials. Reruns of the original series have aired on Food Network’s sister channel, GAC. The show remains a cornerstone of Deen’s television legacy and the launching pad for her entire media career.
