Not My Mama’s Meals

A Cooking Channel show featuring Bobby Deen transforming his mother, Paula Deen’s, indulgent Southern recipes into healthier, still-delicious dishes.

Not My Mama’s Meals is a culinary series that debuted on Cooking Channel on January 4, 2012. The show ran for four seasons and 50 episodes, concluding on November 27, 2013. It was created by and starred Bobby Deen, who is the son of Food Network celebrity chef Paula Deen. The series drew on the popularity of Paula Deen’s cooking empire while putting a fresh, health-conscious spin on her classic recipes.

The show’s concept is straightforward. Bobby Deen takes a well-known recipe from his mother’s catalog — typically rich, buttery Southern comfort food — and rebuilds it with fewer calories, less fat, and leaner ingredients, without sacrificing flavor. Each episode features clips from Paula Deen’s various Food Network shows, displaying the original recipe’s nutritional content alongside Bobby’s healthier version for comparison.

Bobby’s mother, Paula Deen, is a recurring presence in the show. She typically joins from her home in Savannah, Georgia, to sample Bobby’s lighter versions of her dishes. Her reactions — whether approving or skeptical — add warmth and humor to each episode. The mother-son dynamic is central to the show’s appeal, giving it a personal, family-kitchen feel that distinguishes it from standard cooking competitions.

Bobby Deen is the sole host of the series. He is a cookbook author and television personality in his own right, having published several books including From Mama’s Table to Mine (2013), which reached No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller List. He later went on to host Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship for its first three seasons (2014–2016).
