Mastermind

Mastermind is one of Britain’s most iconic and enduring television quiz shows, known for its intense format and distinctive atmosphere. First broadcast in 1972, the programme challenges contestants with demanding questions in a setting that emphasises focus and concentration. It’s famous for its spotlighted black chair, dramatic pacing, and reputation as a true test of knowledge under pressure.

Each episode typically features four contestants who face two rounds of quizzing. In the first, they answer rapid-fire questions on a specialist subject of their own choosing, topics can range from ancient history to pop culture, fiction, science or sport. The second round shifts to general knowledge, where breadth of understanding across many areas is tested.

The atmosphere of Mastermind is deliberately austere and serious. Contestants sit alone in the famous black chair, illuminated by a spotlight, with minimal studio audience noise, heightening the tension and drama as the clock counts down. This focus on the lone competitor’s knowledge and nerves has become a defining trademark of the show.

Over the years, Mastermind has become a cultural touchstone in the UK, with its challenging format and memorable theme music (“Approaching Menace”) making it instantly recognisable to television audiences. Beyond regular episodes, the format has spawned specials such as Celebrity Mastermind and junior editions, further embedding the quiz in British TV tradition.

The long-running quiz is presently hosted by Clive Myrie, a distinguished BBC journalist and broadcaster. Myrie took over presenting duties in 2021, becoming the fifth host in the programme’s history and bringing his own calm authority and gravitas to the iconic format. Prior to Mastermind, he was best known for his work on BBC News where he has served as a presenter and international correspondent.
