Expedition Impossible

Thirteen teams race 2,000 miles across Morocco’s deserts and mountains, competing for $150,000.

Expedition Impossible is a reality competition series that premiered on ABC on June 23, 2011. It was created by veteran producer Mark Burnett — the force behind Survivor and The Apprentice. The show drew immediate comparisons to CBS’s The Amazing Race. However, its all-terrain Moroccan setting and elimination-per-stage format gave it its own identity.

The competition followed 13 teams of three, each with a pre-existing real-life connection — friends, couples, siblings, and colleagues. The race began in Merzouga and ended in Marrakesh, covering roughly 2,000 miles of Moroccan territory, including the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert.

The show was structured into 10 stages, each containing a series of checkpoints. At each checkpoint, teams received instructions on how to reach the next one, and some checkpoints required completing a challenge before advancing. The last team to reach the final checkpoint in each stage was eliminated. The last team standing received $50,000 per person and a new Ford Explorer each.

Dave Salmoni served as the host of Expedition Impossible. A Canadian wildlife expert and zoologist, Salmoni is best known for his work with large predators and has previously appeared in several National Geographic and Animal Planet programs. An adaptation later aired in Spain in January 2013, hosted by Raquel Sánchez-Silva, featuring celebrity pairs racing through Morocco.

The series debut drew 7.18 million viewers and a 2.4 rating in the key 18–49 demographic, winning its timeslot. But, despite the strong opening, ratings declined steadily each week. It was ultimately cancelled following its first and only season of 10 episodes, which concluded in August 2011.
