Don’t Forget the Lyrics! is an American musical game show that originally premiered on Fox in 2007. Created by Jeff Apploff — who also produces Beat Shazam and Name That Tune — the show has had three distinct runs: a two-season primetime run from 2007 to 2009, a syndicated season in 2010–11, and a current revival that premiered on Fox in 2022. The format has also spawned international versions in dozens of countries.
Each episode features a single contestant who works their way up a money ladder by correctly completing the missing lyrics of songs. The contestant selects from nine categories — spanning different genres, decades, and artists — and takes centre stage to sing along karaoke-style as the lyrics are displayed on screen. When the music suddenly stops, and the words vanish, they must belt out the missing lyrics from memory. They can choose to lock in their answer and risk their accumulated winnings or walk away with what they’ve already earned.
A contestant who successfully navigates all nine songs is presented with a number one hit — the Million Dollar Song — with the chance to win the show’s top prize of $1 million by completing the final missing lyrics. To assist along the way, contestants have access to lifelines called “Backups,” which include the Backup Singer — bringing a personal supporter on stage to help — and Five Words, which allows the contestant to reveal up to five correct words.
The format has undergone notable changes across its three runs. The original Fox version used a top prize of $1 million and featured a live house band led by music director Rickey Minor — himself a longtime music director on American Idol. The syndicated version scaled back the top prize to $50,000 and dropped the live band in favour of a partnership with MySpace Karaoke. The current Fox revival restored the $1 million prize and the live band format, while updating the Backups system — starting with Three Words in Season 1 and upgrading to Five Words from Season 3 onward.
Wayne Brady hosted the original Fox run from 2007 to 2009, while Mark McGrath — lead singer of the rock band Sugar Ray and co-host of the syndicated entertainment show Extra — hosted the 2010–11 syndicated version. Niecy Nash, an Emmy Award-winning actress and comedian, has hosted the current Fox revival since its 2022 premiere.
