CBS Evening News

CBS Evening News premiered in 1941, originally titled CBS Television News, and was one of the first regularly scheduled network evening newscasts in American television. Over its many decades on the air, the program has chronicled major world events, national affairs, and cultural stories, evolving alongside changes in broadcast journalism. In 1963, it adopted the title CBS Evening News as network news expanded to a 30-minute format.

CBS Evening News delivers comprehensive coverage of the day’s top stories. Each broadcast includes reports from correspondents and reporters stationed around the world, along with interviews, analysis, in-depth features, and contextual reporting. The program has long been a staple of American television news, combining headline coverage with explanatory journalism to give viewers a deeper understanding of current events.

Through its history, the show’s style and production have evolved with the medium, including changes in set design, theme music, and graphics, as well as expansions into digital and streaming platforms. The program also regularly incorporates contributions from CBS News specialist teams, including political, business, and foreign affairs correspondents. Weekend editions — branded separately as CBS Weekend News — provide similar news coverage tailored to Saturday and Sunday audiences, with their own anchor teams.

Since January 2026, the broadcast has been titled CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil, with veteran journalist Tony Dokoupil serving as anchor as part of a broader effort to revitalize the program. Dokoupil joined the broadcast following the departures of former anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois in late 2025.

Over its long run, CBS Evening News has been anchored by many prominent journalists who shaped its identity, including Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Connie Chung, Bob Schieffer, Katie Couric, Scott Pelley, Jeff Glor, and Norah O’Donnell. These anchors helped define distinct eras of the broadcast and contributed to its reputation for trusted news delivery across generations.
