American Idol

American Idol is a cultural phenomenon that helped pioneer the modern talent-based reality competition genre. It first premiered in 2002 and initially ran for 15 seasons on FOX before being revived by ABC in 2018.  Originally debuting in 2002, the series spent 15 seasons on FOX before being revived by ABC in 2018. As of early 2026, the show is in its 24th season, which is its 9th on ABC. The program continues to receive strong ratings, airing on Monday nights on ABC and available for streaming the next day on Hulu and Disney+.

The show’s core format combines performance with audience participation. Contestants audition nationwide, advancing through themed rounds for a chance to perform live to receive votes from viewers across America. As the competition progresses toward the finale, voting becomes crucial in determining who continues and who ultimately wins. Recent changes, such as updates to Hollywood Week and expanded voting platforms, demonstrate ongoing efforts to keep the competition fresh and engaging for today’s audiences.

American Idol is hosted by Ryan Seacrest, who has been the show’s only host since its inception. The current judging panel consists of Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood, a former Idol winner and the first alumnus to join the panel. Notable former judges include Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen DeGeneres, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Kate Perry.

Like many talent-search reality competitions, American Idol has helped discover and launch several stars, including the iconic season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson and season 4 winner Carrie Underwood. Other stars include Jennifer Hudson, Scotty McCreery, Chris Daughtry, and Adam Lambert.
