Stephanie Rose McGovern was born on 31 May 1982 in North Shields, Tyne and Wear, and grew up in Middlesbrough. She is an only child; her father is Irish and a professional artist, a Royal College of Art graduate whose home full of sculptures and paintings shaped her upbringing.

She began at the BBC as a Tomorrow’s World work-experience researcher, later producing financial news for Radio 4’s Today programme before becoming BBC Breakfast‘s main business presenter from 2011 to 2019. She left the BBC in 2019 to front Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch (2020–2023).
