Simon James Lazenby was born on 20 March 1975. His parents’ names and hometown have not been publicly disclosed. At Durham University, he played as a scrum-half for the rugby club and captained his college team, St. Hild and St. Bede. After graduating, he worked initially as a grain trader for a private firm in Lincolnshire, before obtaining work experience at Sky through fellow Durham alumnus Mark Durden-Smith, eventually passing a screen test after some months as a runner.
Lazenby joined Sky Sports in April 1998, initially on a three-month work experience scheme. Following a screen test with Sky Sports News, he became the presenter of The Rugby Club and Sky’s live rugby union coverage, serving as lead rugby presenter between 2002 and 2011. During that period he was the lead presenter on two British and Irish Lions tours, 10 Heineken Cup Finals, and international matches from around the world.
Lazenby has been the lead presenter of Sky Sports F1 coverage since the channel’s inception in 2012. Since 2014, he has presented every practice, qualifying, and race session for each event.
Lazenby co-founded Sylver Entertainment, a media company focused on sports content, and has served as a producer on documentaries including The Greatest Game (2022), Schmeichel (2025), and Hill (2025). By June 2025, Lazenby announced he would publish his first book, Pressure, in the latter half of the 2025 Formula One season. Simon lives in South West London with his wife and two children.
