Pien Meulensteen was born in January 1997 in the Netherlands, and spent part of her early childhood in Qatar. She is the daughter of Marieke and René Meulensteen — the latter a well-known football coach who served as a first-team coach and assistant manager at Manchester United — and has two brothers, Joppe and Melle (Melle also works in football). Growing up in a football-immersed household shaped her early passion for the game.

She studied broadcast journalism at the University of Salford, graduating in 2019, while working as a broadcasting assistant at BBC Radio Manchester and later moving into producing and guest booking for football coverage. She then joined MUTV, Manchester United’s in-house channel, where she was encouraged to try match commentary following the relaunch of the club’s women’s team in 2018 — marking her entry into on-air football analysis.

Pien commentated for ITV Sport at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and in July 2023 joined the Sky Sports commentary team for the WSL, going on to become their lead female commentator across the Premier League, EFL, and WSL. In 2023, at age 28, she made history as the first woman to call a live Premier League match on Sky Sports.

She has since taken on presenting roles too, hosting Sky’s new EFL Goal Zone (part of Soccer Saturday) from the 2024/25 season, and presenting Match Day Live across the EFL and WSL, alongside her Premier League commentary debut as a presenter.
