Paddy O’Connell was born 11 March 1966 in Guildford, Surrey, England. He was educated at Gresham’s School in Norfolk and later studied political science at the University of Aberdeen. He began his broadcasting career in 1989 through the BBC’s local radio trainee scheme, working as a reporter for BBC local stations in Devon, Essex, and Cleveland. In 1994 he joined the launch team of BBC Radio 5 Live, where he built his reputation as a news presenter and reporter.

In 1997, O’Connell moved to New York City as the BBC’s North America business correspondent and Wall Street anchor, appearing regularly on BBC World and BBC One news programmes. He was in New York during the September 11, 2001 attacks and helped report the unfolding events for BBC audiences worldwide.

Since 2006, he has hosted Broadcasting House on BBC Radio 4, one of the BBC’s flagship Sunday morning news programmes. In 2024–2025, he also became a regular presenter of Newsnight on BBC Two while continuing radio and podcast work with the BBC.
