Nigella Lucy Lawson was born on 6 January 1960 in Wandsworth, London, to Nigel Lawson (later Baron Lawson of Blaby), a Conservative politician and Chancellor of the Exchequer under Margaret Thatcher, and Vanessa Salmon, a socialite and heiress to the J. Lyons and Co. fortune. She has three full siblings, Dominic, Horatia, and the late Thomasina, plus a half-brother and half-sister from her father’s second marriage.

After graduating from Oxford, Lawson worked as a restaurant critic and became deputy literary editor of The Sunday Times at 26. Her 1998 debut cookbook, How to Eat, became a bestseller, followed by How to Be a Domestic Goddess, which won the British Book Award for Author of the Year.

She began hosting her own cookery series with Channel 4’s Nigella Bites (1999–2001), later moving to BBC Two for shows including Nigella’s Christmas Kitchen, Nigella Express, Simply Nigella, Nigellissima (an 8-part series exploring Italian-inspired cooking), and Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat. In January 2026, she was announced as the new judge on The Great British Bake Off, replacing Prue Leith alongside Paul Hollywood.

Lawson has sold more than eight million cookery books worldwide and built the Living Kitchen cookware range. She is not publicly known to be remarried following her 2013 divorce from Charles Saatchi, and continues to live in London.
