Nicholas James Dougherty was born on 24 May 1982 in Bootle, Merseyside. When he was around 10, his family moved from Liverpool to a lodge by Shaw Hill Golf Club in Chorley, Lancashire, specifically so he could dedicate himself to practicing golf; his father, Raymond, was a self-made businessman who strongly supported his golfing ambitions.

He attended Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn and had an outstanding amateur career under the mentorship of Nick Faldo, winning the 1999 World Boys Championship, three Faldo Junior Series events, and representing Great Britain & Ireland in the winning 2001 Walker Cup team.

Turning professional in 2001, Dougherty joined the European Tour in 2002, was named Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, and won three European Tour titles between 2005 and 2007, reaching a career-high spot in the world’s top 50.

His form declined after 2011, and he stepped away from competitive play, joining Sky Sports Golf as a presenter — pioneering a world-first “mic’d up” live golf broadcast in 2015. Since 2019 he has been Sky Sports’ lead presenter for the men’s majors and the Ryder Cup.
