Mike Wedderburn was born on 28 March 1964 in Portsmouth, Hampshire. He is of Barbadian descent; his brother, James “Jim” Wedderburn CBE, won a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay for the British West Indies at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

He was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School, before studying English Literature at university level and completing an MSc in Sports Science at Loughborough University.

Before broadcasting, Wedderburn had a decade-long career as a professional sportsman, playing cricket as a fast bowler for Hampshire’s Second XI (1982–1984) and rugby union for Harlequins and Wasps, including featuring in Harlequins’ 1991–92 Pilkington Cup Final defeat to Bath, before injury ended his playing career.

He began broadcasting at Channel 4 in 1991, moved to the BBC (Grandstand, Sportsnight, Rugby Special), then to ITV as international rugby reporter in 1997, before joining Sky Sports News as one of its founding presenters at launch in 1998. He has anchored Good Morning Sports Fans ever since, alongside covering major cricket, rugby, and football tournaments.
