Michael Todd Tirico was born on December 13, 1966, in New York City and grew up in Queens. He graduated from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1988, where he was the first recipient of the Bob Costas Scholarship. He launched his career as sports director at CBS affiliate WTVH in Syracuse before joining ESPN in 1991 as a SportsCenter anchor.
Over 25 years at ESPN, Tirico became the network’s most versatile broadcaster — calling Monday Night Football, The Masters, the FIFA World Cup, NBA games, and Wimbledon. He joined NBC Sports in July 2016, initially hosting Notre Dame football and the Olympics before replacing Al Michaels as the play-by-play voice of Sunday Night Football in 2022. In October 2025, he also became NBC’s lead NBA play-by-play announcer. In February 2026, Tirico called Super Bowl LX with Cris Collinsworth, then flew to Milan to host NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage, becoming the first U.S. broadcaster to do both in the same year.
Tirico has been married to Deborah “Debbie” Gibaratz since 1991; the couple met at Syracuse University, where Debbie captained the women’s basketball team. They have two children, Jordan and Cammi.
