Michael Angus

Profile Overview

Michael Angus was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in October 1963. His father was a civil engineer who worked on the Baillieston Motorway Interchange and the extension of the dual carriageway that runs along the western edge of Loch Lomond — and was also an avid reader whose professional and personal attributes informed Michael’s future both as a person and in his career.

After leaving school, Angus went to the Glasgow School of Art to study architecture. He entered the profession in 1988, and from then until the mid-1990s he worked extensively in commercial practice. He then drifted into teaching architecture, and since 1996 has taught at the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, working his way up to become senior lecturer and ultimately Departmental Director of Education in 2010.

The original judging panel of Scotland’s Home of the Year consisted of Michael Angus as architect and lecturer, alongside Anna Campbell-Jones and Kate Spiers. Angus served as a judge for five series from the show’s debut in April 2019 until Series 5 in 2023. Glasgow-based architect Danny Campbell joined the judging panel for Series 6 in 2024, replacing Michael Angus.

Michael is married to Angela, and the couple have a daughter, Katie. Their son Christopher died suddenly at the age of six from a rare genetic mutation which caused a critical heart condition. Michael dedicated The Pointless Rose (a children’s book) to Christopher’s memory, incorporating Christopher’s thoughts and inspiration and Katie’s illustrations.
