Melanie Jones OAM was born 11 August 1972 in Barnstaple, Devon. She moved with her mother to Melbourne, Australia at three months old, while her father, a Trinidadian, stayed back in England; she did not meet him until she was 16, though his connection to West Indian cricketers of the era helped draw her to the sport.

She attended Elwood Secondary College in Melbourne, where her cricket development was nurtured by her geography teacher John Handscomb (father of Test player Peter Handscomb). She went on to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement and a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education at Victoria University.

She has commentated for Sky (UK) since 2002, including a stint with Sky Sports UK directly from 2002–2008, and now appears regularly for Sky Sports Cricket coverage, including the Ashes. She currently anchors coverage for Fox Sports’ Cricket team and leads commentary for major events including World Cups.

Since 2019, she has served on the Cricket Australia board, drawing on her playing, coaching, and media experience.
