Matt Barrie grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, and graduated from Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism in 2001. He began his career that year at WJFW-TV in Wausau, Wisconsin, covering the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. He later worked at KSWO-TV in Oklahoma and WLTX-TV in South Carolina before joining KXAS-TV in Dallas in 2008.
Barrie then joined ESPN in March 2013, where he co-anchored SportsCenter at noon and later at 2 pm ET. He also hosted SportsCenter on the Road from college campuses and major events like the Masters. In 2018, he made his debut as host of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Starting in 2019, he has also served as ESPN’s studio host for college football Saturdays.
Barrie currently co-anchors the afternoon edition of SportsCenter. He has hosted SEC Nation, the SEC Network’s weekly traveling college football show. Additionally, he hosts ESPN’s College Football Final recap show and calls Thursday night college football play-by-play. In 2025, he added play-by-play duties for TGL, ESPN’s tech-centric golf league, and signed a multi-year contract extension with the network.
